What is HIV?

HHumanThis particular virus can only infect human beings.

IImmunodeficiencyHIV weakens your immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. A "deficient" immune system can't protect you.

VVirus – A virus can only reproduce itself by taking over a cell in the body of its host.

What is AIDS?

AAcquiredAIDS is not something you inherit from your parents. You acquire AIDS after birth.

IImmuno – Your body's immune system includes all the organs and cells that work to fight off infection or disease.

DDeficiency – You get AIDS when your immune system is "deficient," or isn't working the way it should.

SSyndrome – A syndrome is a collection of symptoms and signs of disease. AIDS is a syndrome, rather than a single disease, because it is a complex illness with a wide range of complications and symptoms.

Nkosi Johnson

                        Nkosi Johnson was born on  February 4, 1989 and died of HIV/AIDS in June 1, 2001. Johnson was the first child born with HIV/AIDS to live as long as to 12 years of age. Nkosi was HIV positive from birth and he never knew his father. He was legally adopted by Gail Johnson when his mother had also died from the disease and could no longer take care of him. Nkosi first came to public attention when the school he was going to attend refused him because he was HIV positive. This problem caused a furor at political level and later  the school reversed its decision.Johnson was a speaker at the 13th International AIDS Conference, where he encouraged people with HIV/AIDS to be open about the disease and these were the words that ended his speech.

 "Care for us and accept us - we are all human beings. We are normal. We have hands. We have feet. We can walk, we can talk, we have needs just like everyone else - don't be afraid of us - we are all the same!"

Tim Richmond

              
               Tim Richmond was born June 7, 1955 and he was an American race car driver from Ashland, Ohio. Before transferring to NASCAR's Winston series he competed for Indy Car racing. He won the 1980 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award and also had 13 victories during 8 NASCAR seasons. August 13, 1989 Richmond died at the age of 34. Ten days after his death his family had a press conference saying that Richmond had died because he had AIDS, which he got infected by an unknown women.

Rock Hudson

                He was born November 17, 1925, known professionally as Rock Hudson, was an American film and television actor, mostly known for the most romantic leading man in several romantic comedies with Doris Day. Hudson was diagnosed with HIV on July 1985 instead of telling the press/publicity his crew said that he had liver cancer. Hudson continued to work but also travel to try and find a cure or a treatment to slow the process. Later on Hudson announced to the press that he was dying of AIDS. Also in another announcement he speculated that he got HIV from an infected donor when he was getting a blood transfusion for his heart bypass procedure. Rock Hudson died in October 2, 1985.

Tommy Sexton

                     Thomas "Tommy" Sexton was born July 3, 1957 and he was a Canadian comedian . Born in St.john's, Newfoundland and also the youngest CODCO who joined the comedy troupe. Sexton who was openly gay felt ill because of complications with AIDS.Sexton later died in December 13, 1933.His colleague Greg Malone who he has toured with in two co-written works, The Wonderful Grand Band and Two Foolish to Talk About  campaigned for HIV and AIDS education in Sexton's memory. Also his sister Mary Sexton        who is a filmmaker made a movie about him called ''Tommy.....A Family Portrait''. In St. john's was opened a housing for people living with either HIV or AIDS in 2006 called '' The Tommy Sexton Centre''.

Kevin Peter Hall

                       Kevin Peter Hall you might remember him for his role in the 1987 movie '' Predator''. If you don't then let me tell you about his life. Kevin was born May 9,1955 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA. He got a scholarship by playing basketball throughout his HS years. He continued to play basketball in college but did not let it come between his major in Theatrical Arts, which he studied at George Washington University in Washington, DC. During his college years Hall met Jay Fenichel which he  in the future made musical  productions with .After graduation Fenichel moved to Los Angelas and hall moved to Venezuela to play basketball , but later lost interest. So hall moved to Los Angelas along with Fenichel and they did some promotional business where they did promotional acts in department stores for new products.

                    He married and had two children with his co star Alaina Reed while working on the series of ''227''in 1985. ''Predator 2'' came December 1990 and in April 1991 Hall died from AIDS because a few months before he had a blood transfusion and got AIDS.
